Personal growth means something different to each of us. 

For me, it’s about self awareness. 


Self awareness gives us the ability to see when something in our life no longer serves our highest good.  Once we can see it, we can then work through it, in order to attain wellbeing, peace, joy, love and happiness. 


This introduction and links below are focused at the fundamental levels of self awareness, consciousness, conditioning and beliefs.


Starting in our formative years our reactions to our experiences form our perceptions, which in turn form our beliefs and ego to make up our conditioning.  This has all become content of our subconscious mind, to which we constantly interact with unconsciously.


I believe that we are much more than our conditioning, even though many of us naturally and unconsciously judge ourselves – and others – solely from a physical and material perspective.


“We feel and perform our best to the level at which we are conscious or aligned with our inner self, feeling at one with our self and universe, feeling inspired.”

Take a moment to remember how it feels to be in that state of oneness, a state which comes when you are totally engrossed in doing something you love.  Remember the joy and contentment, the inspiration that comes to you when you are no longer aware of the external world.  When time does not matter.  When all that exists is a feeling of connection or unity with the collective consciousness. 


There is a meditative quality in this state, when our intuition works clearly. Some call it ‘being in the moment’ or ‘in the zone’, as all our senses are heightened, including our ‘sixth sense’.  If we don’t get this state from our work or life, it helps to take time for ourselves doing something we love to feel that inner connection. 

What is the self?  Who Am I?

“What is this "I"? You will, on close introspection, find that what you really mean by "I" is the ground-stuff upon which all experiences and memories are collected.”-Erwin Schrödinger, Physicist and Nobel Laureate.

Through introspection and studying the fundamental levels of reality, Erwin Schrödinger also experienced oneness with the universe.  This quote above refers to Consciousness – the “I” or “Inner Self” which is the one consciousness within all of us.  An easy way to understand this is by using the analogy of the light from a projector, and a film.  The light in the projector is Consciousness, our ‘I’ or ‘Inner Self’, and the film is our individual conditioned self, which is shaped and coloured by our perception of our experiences.  So our experiences may differ, but our essence, our source ‘Consciousness’ is the same consciousness (or light) that resides within all of us and is that which unites all of us.  This is what Schrödinger refers to as the “ground stuff” of all being – and at this level, no-one is above you and no-one is below you.  Ref: -The Primacy of Consciousness link below.

In the pursuit of personal growth, “knowing thyself”, seeing what lies within, with an open heart and mind, helps us to become conscious of our thoughts and feelings. This is similar to the Buddhist practice of being “mindful”.


Research shows that from the womb to the age of six, we are being conditioned to our environment while we are developing our perceptions and beliefs.   There may have been situations in our early childhood which were traumatic, or we may have been exposed to disharmonious emotions such as fear or anger. Or we could have experienced love, understanding and encouragement in a nurturing environment.  Whatever we experienced in these formative years will continue to be attracted to us, as long as those beliefs remain unchallenged.  Simply put, our beliefs will set up similar events in our life.


Most of our thoughts about life run from this conditioned program.  This means that the dreams and goals we set from the conscious mind can be undermined by beliefs that exist below our awareness, in the subconscious, by this conditioned programming.




In the physical world, we create a mask or persona, so we can fit in socially and superficially, but beneath that mask lies who we really are.  Underneath the mask are all our fears and worries and conditioning. That’s why we react to situations and other people in ways that surprise us and in ways that we can’t consciously control; the mask only covers up the programming, it doesn’t undo it. 


Our conditioned patterns of behaviour or subconscious beliefs have a life of their own.  They run automatically, and it’s as if we have little or no control over them.  But we are responsible for our lives, so we blame ourselves, others, or the situation, trying to maintain the status quo.  Hopefully, once the pain gets too much, we start to question this status quo, and then begins the journey to work through that conditioning.


When we feel, accept and learn from our beliefs and patterns of behaviour, by being mindful, by being conscious and living in the moment, we can have some control over our thoughts.  Life tends to mirror your beliefs and feelings.  (Ref: - 7 Essene Mirrors link below.)


Being aware of our feelings and thoughts and viewing the self and others with love and compassion, while living in the moment as much as possible, we can align our self with our inner being, the ‘I’ or ‘Inner Self’ and close the gap from where we were to where we want to be.


It feels very empowering when we can be grateful for all our experiences, as they are great teachers and yes, some are very traumatic and can be very difficult to work through.  It’s about finding what works for you. 


After we learn what’s no longer serving us, it becomes clear that if we continue to focus on what we don’t want in our life, that’s what we will continue to attract.  (Ref: - The Law of Attraction link below.)


Feel the emotion you are experiencing!  Is it contentment, sadness, anger, ‘fear or ‘love’?  Emotions are natural, we all have them. Whatever the emotion is, it is showing you the thoughts and beliefs that lie in the subconscious mind. 


If you feel angry or sad, briefly allow and feel that emotion.  Notice what it does to your body and where it affects you.  If you accept that feeling for what it is – an indication of what you were focusing on, coloured by your perception – and then without blame on self or others, own it and explore it, you can work through it and personally grow from it. You may choose help in the form of a therapy, or you may simply feel your feelings and begin to align with what you truly want.

Most of the time, it’s not the experience itself that creates continual pain and suffering; rather it’s our attachment to the event, our resistance to letting go of the experience, the perception or memory or fear of it.


Where do those emotions come from?  Was it your reaction to something someone said or did?  "People are not disturbed by things, but by the views they take of them."  -Epictetus, 2nd century Greek Philosopher. 


Be aware that we cannot control others, and constant negative thoughts and emotions or repression of others can make us feel disconnected or sick, and may manifest as a disease.
